The latest stories we have read dealt with the idea of
zombies. Zombies portray the idea of
deciding between what is dead and what is human and alive. Zombie stories also relate to the uncanny and
the uncanny valley, which represent our feelings about uncomfortable
familiarity. We also saw the uncanny in
an earlier story, the sandman, where Olympia the automaton mimicked the
functions of living humans. The question
often asked in zombie stories is, “when does humanity end?” The brain and consciousness are shut off but
the bodies of people we once new are turned back on; which mirrors the uncanny.
