It seems
to me that literature or writings that include the walking dead highlight the
stresses of family. When put up against something so dangerous and fearsome, it
really puts the ties of family to the test. Family could mean by blood or by
the new family formed by a group sharing the same experience. Anyways,
when the bonds and ties between people are extremely stressed by the situation,
I think that is when the morals and values of a person really shine. I guess in
a way, a post apocalyptic situation, or a situation completely different from
what a person feels is normal, peels back enough layers of a person to show who
they really are. When the boy’s grandfather died in the reading, his last
thoughts were for protecting his grandson, but that changed when he turned.
Zombies, the undead, or anything similar, play the role of revealing people and
maybe all of it is saying that if we peel back enough layers, we are the
monsters.
