Implanted Memories

I was particularly intrigued by "We Can Remember It For You, Wholesale" because the idea that it might be possible to implant memories would further the idea that humans are simply complex machines. If what makes us human is a culmination of our remembered experiences and ideas then if those might possibly be faked what makes humans real? One of the fears common in the "uncanny" is the doubt about whether or not something is alive and what distinguishes humans from machines. Humans are functionally a series of chemical processes and mechanical responses so if thoughts are what separate humans from machines than the revelation that thoughts can also be mechanized and controlled implies that they are entirely mechanic. If it does in fact become possible to supplant human experiences, the next big question that society would have to face would be what is another thing that can distinguish humanity.
