28 Days Later

In 28 Days Later Danny Boyle addresses humanity vs survival. In the movie Jim meets Selena who demonstrates that the new world, filled with an infection, is based on survival and she will not hesitate to kill Jim nor allow anybody to put her life at risk or slow her down. Selena’s opinion on survival over humanity greatly disturbs Jim and he refuses to lose his humanity. Selena’s opinion about survival over humanity shows how under life threating circumstances many people in society will choose to save themselves rather than helping other people in need. Many people may see this act as selfishness or ignorance, but I believe that under stress, panic, and especially life threating events it is a human trait to tend to our own safety and needs before others especially if they are strangers. Although 28 Days Later showed how humanity can be lost due to survival, it also shows how life threatening events bring people together to create a group or family that help each other to survive. The act of people gathering together in times of need shows that although humanity can be lost because of survival, humanity can also be created due to survival. The relationship between survival and humanity are connected in a form that survival can over take humanity or that survival can create humanity. 28 Days Later did a great job demonstrating the significances of the relationship between survival and humanity.
