Zombies as Political Commentary

Some things I find very telling about zombie stories are the source of the infection as well as the response to infection. Zombie tales can often be interpreted as scathing political commentaries about oppressive governments. Most infections start out as a fault of the government. In the movie "28 Days Later", experimental testing on monkeys allows for the infection to span throughout London. A nuclear accident also infects anyone who dies in "Danger Word". These are both not the infected peoples' fault. Zombie movies are interesting because the "monsters" can be portrayed as victims as well since they do nothing wrong. This causes confusion for the viewer or reader because they want to perceive the zombies as villains but they also are being victimized by situations not in their control. The response the government has during these crises is also demonstrative of governmental failures. The National Guard often fails during stories or the government backs out of helping people because of self preservation. A conflict these kind of stories approaches is the question of decency and humanity versus wanting to save your own life.
