The Yellow Wallpaper is one of the texts that I found more interesting than the rest because of how the author portrayed the main character. Although it starts off with a typical eerie, old house, it makes the reader and myself question what exactly husband’s motifs are in curing his poor wife. When the main character looks around the house and is seeing things on the wallpaper, it creates makes me wonder of whether she is actually crazy from her condition, or if it really her husband’s cure that is making her this way. In the beginning of the text, it is very difficult to tell who or how she is as a character. It is difficult to tell her mental state. The things she describes on the wall, “I hate to see it sometimes, it creeps so slowly, and always comes in by one window or another.” I immediately assume that this woman has mental issues or is very imaginative, and I begin to dislike her creepiness. It forces me to watch out for this woman. As the text goes on, I begin to change my mind on her when John comes more in the picture. It becomes clear that she’s trapped in this room with nothing else to look at the wallpaper. It becomes obvious that the so called “treatment” is causing her to go crazy, giving a chance for me to be more accepting of her.
