"The Yellow Wallpaper" and "The Little Room"

When reading "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and "The Little Room" by H.P. Lovecraft I felt there was a relationship between these two readings. A recurring theme I found was feminism and the motif in the stories was being able to see things that others couldn't see. In "The Yellow Wallpaper," the main character is not just physically trapped in the room where John keeps her but she is also mentally trapped because John and Jennie prevents her from voicing her own opinion. She soon sees that there is a women hidden beneath the wallpaper in the room which only she can see and realizes later on that it is actually herself. In the "The Little Room," the characters (mainly women) see either a little room or a china-closet and the rooms keep changing which alters the character's perceptions so that they don't know what to believe. We also see in these two pieces a recurrent gothic theme which is different than the customary gothic stories because the settings weren't dark and ominous but instead the gothic ideas come from the narrator's mind. Fantastic events occur and make the character's see things that can't be seen by others which makes the narrator's seem almost crazy or mentally ill. These events occur and they don't know whether to believe if they are real or if they should believe in what others tell them. Overall, I really enjoyed these two readings because these short stories don't just tell us the events that happen but also show us what the protagonists are thinking each step of the way and see their transformation.
