Descent into madness
Some people believe that novels such as The Yellow Wallpaper may not strictly count as gothic due to the fact that there is no supernatural aspect to it. I personally believe that, despite the lack of a supernatural element, the psychological horror of the whole descent into madness aspect validates it as a gothic novel. In a sense, the novel reminded me of The Tell Tale Heart, one that is usually considered gothic in nature. In both, the main character is driven to madness not by any form of a ghost or ghoul, but by their environment and their interpretations of it.
