Similar to the other previous readings such as 'The Rats in the Walls' and 'The Yellow Wall Paper,' Haunting of Hill house focuses on the Gothic theme of old, gigantic house with strange history. In addition to using the house as a background that events occur, in the story of the Haunting Hill House, the author describes that this house is aware of the people in it, watching and waiting to haunt them. Although Dr. Montague, one of the characters, tries to explain the supernatural events that occur in the house, some of them is rather unexplainable (an extremely cold room that is suppose to be the heart of the house, continuous hallucination that the characters face, writings and blood on the wall).
Aside from the house itself, it is quite interesting that characters in the book of old fantasy literature are quite different from the characters of contemporary Hollywood horror movies. While characters from the Hollywood horror movies tend to run away from the house when they face danger or experience horrific events, those in stories that are mentioned above rather stay and try to solve the mystery that surrounds the house. Moreover, Eleanor in the Haunting of Hill House, who dislikes the Haunted House in the beginning, ends up accepting it as where she belongs.
